The domestic energy price cap

Check scope, period and your household account first. This page shows no unverified figures and does not apply to business contracts.

Understand the scope, then read the current official reference

This page explains the general purpose and limits of the domestic Price Cap, with one official reference that includes its effective period and source. It is not your actual bill, confirmation of an individual tariff, switching advice or a business-contract price.

Current official reference (Direct Debit average)

Applies from 1 October to 31 December 2026, based on average unit rates and daily standing charges for Direct Debit in England, Scotland and Wales. The £1,723 figure is a typical-household annual reference, not a bill ceiling or a prediction of your bill.

Typical household annual reference
£1,723
Average electricity
Unit rate: 26.32p/kWhDaily standing charge: 54.83p/day
Average gas
Unit rate: 7.97p/kWhDaily standing charge: 29.68p/day

Last checked: 2026-10-02

Figures come from Ofgem’s regional/payment-method tables and are rounded to two decimal places. Your actual rates vary by region, payment method and tariff; use your supplier bill and Ofgem postcode tool. The source also states that gas includes 5% VAT while electricity has no VAT from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, so it cannot be simply compared with earlier periods.

What it can help you understand

The Price Cap is one piece of official context for household energy. Whether it applies, and how it affects an account, must be checked against the actual tariff, payment arrangement, address/region and supplier information.

Not a bill total
Even where an account is affected by a relevant arrangement, the actual bill can still depend on usage, billing period, standing charge and other applicable items.
Not a business-contract price
It is not a quote, ceiling or contract protection for a shop, office, or supply used for letting or trade.
Not switching advice
This page does not compare suppliers, forecast savings, or advise you to enter, switch or end any supply arrangement.

Check these before using any information

Your account details
Supply address, fuel, tariff name, payment method and the applicable dates on the bill or notice.
Source and date
The official page’s publication/update date and the effective period in a supplier notice. Do not rely on a social-media screenshot alone.
Your actual bill
Read usage, unit rate, standing charge, billing period and any discount/adjustment separately.

Keep home and business separate

Where supply is for a shop, office or another business use, do not use this home topic instead of business-contract information. Use documents and routes that match the account type and supply address.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Price Cap guarantee I will pay less?

No. EnergyScope does not promise any bill amount or saving. Check the account and current official/supplier information first.

Why should I read the figure with its effective period?

Price Cap figures can change by period, region, fuel and payment method. Check this page’s effective period and source alongside your account and supplier information.

Can I use it to compare a business quote?

No. A home topic and a business quote/contract have different purposes, bases and scopes.

I think a supplier applied the wrong charge — what should I do?

Keep the bill and notice, identify the period, tariff or charge you want checked, and ask the supplier for a written response. That does not mean EnergyScope has decided a charge is wrong.
